Part 1: How to Prepare for Termite Fumigation
If you're in the pre-fumigation stage, here's what needs to happen before the tent goes up.
Remove or bag all food, medications, and consumables. This is the most important prep step. Anything you or your family will consume needs to either leave the house or go into Nylofume bags, the specially certified bags provided by your fumigation company that are impermeable to the fumigant gas. This includes open packages in the pantry, items in the refrigerator, medications, vitamins, pet food, and anything in open containers. Sealed, commercially canned goods in intact metal or glass cans are generally fine to leave, but when in doubt, bag it or take it out.
All people and pets must leave. The fumigant gas used in termite tenting (sulfuryl fluoride) is toxic to all living things during the treatment window. Every person, pet, and plant in the household needs to vacate. This includes fish tanks, which need to be covered and the pump turned off, or removed entirely.
Coordinate gas shut-off. In most cases, your gas service must be shut off before fumigation begins. Our team will communicate the specific plan for your home, and you'll need to schedule a visit with the utility company to relight the pilot lights after re-entry is cleared.
Unlock and prep interior access. Interior doors, cabinets, and closets should be left open so the gas can circulate through every space. Mattresses wrapped in plastic should have the plastic removed. Our technicians will walk you through a complete pre-treatment checklist specific to your home before we begin.
Arrange lodging for 2 to 3 days. The average tenting time is 24 to 72 hours from tent-up to cleared re-entry, depending on the structure's size and the required gas concentration. Plan for three full days away to be safe.
Part 2: What Happens During the Fumigation
Once the tent is secured over your home, here's what's happening inside.
The fumigant is introduced. Sulfuryl fluoride is pumped into the tented structure in calculated concentrations based on your home's size and the severity of the infestation. Unlike spray treatments, the gas penetrates every void, cavity, wall space, and piece of wood in the structure, including areas that no spray, bait, or spot treatment can reach.
A warning agent is used. We also use a compound called chloropicrin (a form of tear gas) during the process. This is a safety measure to ensure that anyone who might try to enter the structure during treatment is immediately driven out. Our team clears this before your re-entry, but it's why you might notice a faint residual odor when you first open the door. Opening windows for a few minutes handles this completely.
Gas levels are continuously monitored. Our technicians use certified monitoring equipment to track gas concentration throughout the treatment and ensure it reaches the levels required for complete elimination. This is not a "set it and leave" process.
The tent comes down, aeration begins. Once the treatment window is complete, the tent is removed, and the home is aerated. Florida's heat and wind typically make this a relatively fast process.
Part 3: Returning Home After Termite Fumigation
The Clearance Certificate: Your Green Light
The very first thing to know: you wouldn't be able to put your key in the lock if the house wasn't confirmed safe. Florida law is strict about re-entry standards for fumigation. Our licensed technicians use certified air-monitoring devices to test for the presence of the fumigant (sulfuryl fluoride) and confirm it is at or below 1 part per million (ppm), a microscopic trace level. Once the air tests clear, we post a Clearance Notice on the property. That notice is your official green light.
Step 1: Ventilate
Even though your home has been professionally cleared and aerated, we always recommend a quick fresh-air refresh on your first walk-through.
South Florida's humidity means a home sealed up for two to three days can feel a little stale. As soon as you get inside, open windows for 15 to 20 minutes, turn on ceiling fans to get air moving, and set the AC back to your preferred temperature.
The fumigant itself is odorless, but any faint smell you notice is from the chloropicrin warning agent and dissipates quickly with ventilation.
Step 2: Check Utilities
Gas: In many cases, you'll need to coordinate with your gas provider to have pilot lights relit. Our team will have communicated the specific plan for your home before the fumigation starts. Check your pre-treatment paperwork, or call us if you're unsure.
Water and electricity: Leave them exactly as you left them. Do a quick walk-through to confirm everything is functioning.
Do I need to wash dishes or clothes after fumigation? This is the number one question we get. The answer is no. Sulfuryl fluoride is a true gas, meaning it does not leave any liquid, powder, or residue on surfaces, dishes, counters, clothes, or furniture. You do not need to wash dishes, run the washing machine, or wipe down every surface. If you want to give countertops a quick wipe for peace of mind, go ahead, but it's not necessary for safety.
Step 3: Bring Items Back In
Retrieve your Nylofume-bagged food and medications and return them to the pantry. Check that anything you removed from the refrigerator gets restocked. If you removed houseplants or pet supplies, bring those back in as well.
What's That "Sand" on the Floor? (Don't Panic)
In the first 24 to 72 hours after fumigation, you might notice something alarming: small sand-like pellets on the floor, windowsills, or under wooden beams.
This is termite frass, and it means the treatment worked exactly as intended.
Here's what's happening: drywood termites live inside the wood they consume. As the fumigation gas eliminated the colony, the frass and debris packed inside the wood galleries loosened. Over the next few days, as the wood settles and you move furniture, that old frass falls out of the galleries and lands on your floors and surfaces.
You may also find dead termites near windowsills, under beams, or in corners. Same explanation: this is the aftermath, not failure.
What to do: vacuum it up. Keep track of where you find it so you can monitor whether new piles appear in the coming weeks. If you start seeing new active frass or live termites moving around more than 2 weeks after treatment, that's when to call us for a follow-up inspection. What you see in the first few days is normal debris clearing.
Are Pets Safe After Fumigation?
Yes, completely. Once our technician has posted the Clearance Notice and confirmed the air quality meets the certified re-entry standard, your home is safe for your pets.
Because sulfuryl fluoride is a true gas that dissipates completely during aeration, there is no residue on carpets, floors, furniture, or pet bowls for your animals to pick up through contact. Once human re-entry is approved, your pets can return, eat from their bowls, sleep in their usual spots, and resume normal activity without any restrictions.
The 2- to 3-day vacate period during the fumigation applies to pets as well. They cannot remain in the structure during treatment. But once we give the all-clear, there's nothing to worry about.

What Comes After Fumigation: Protecting Against Subterranean Termites
This is the one thing fumigation doesn't address, and it's important to understand.
Tent fumigation eliminates every drywood termite currently inside your structure. What it does not do is create a barrier against subterranean termites approaching from the soil. Formosan and Asian subterranean termites, which are active throughout South Florida, live in underground colonies and enter structures through soil contact, not through the air. The fumigant gas does not penetrate the ground.
This is why post-fumigation soil protection matters, especially in Broward County and Miami-Dade, where invasive subterranean species are at peak pressure. Our termite pre-treatment and ongoing monitoring programs create a protective zone in the soil around your foundation after the tent comes down, closing the gap left open by fumigation alone.
