What to Expect After a Cockroach Extermination

What to Expect After a Cockroach Extermination

If you’re looking into cockroach elimination, you might wonder what happens afterward. Everything from questions about how long it takes for cockroaches to die after extermination to when you can deep clean your home need answers so you can get back to your daily life.

Read through our guide to learn more about what you can expect after cockroach treatments and your next steps.

What Can You Expect After Treating for Cockroaches?

After treatment, you can expect several different things. First, avoid any major or deep cleaning for five to 10 days after treatment. If you have dust and small messes, you can still clean them, but deep cleaning can alter the effectiveness of cockroach elimination.

If you see roaches or nymphs in your home after extermination, do not use bug bombs or other chemicals to get rid of them. To ensure proper treatment effectiveness, you can vacuum them up instead.

Is It Normal to See Cockroaches After Extermination?

The time that cockroaches will remain after treatment depends on the infestation’s size and the treatment used. For example, severe infestations might require multiple treatments.

When you get treatment from trained professionals, you are more likely to see results faster than with store-bought deterrents. In general, how long it takes after extermination for cockroaches to die can depend, but you will usually see some roaches for up to a few weeks after treatment. The treatment disrupts them, which may cause them to appear in your home as they die.

Remember that cockroaches should not return after treatment except in certain circumstances. For example, they are more likely to return if you live in multi-unit housing, such as apartments or townhomes, or garden-style houses.

You may find either American or German cockroaches in your home, but American roaches are the most common. German cockroaches are smaller and have two vertical stripes on their heads. They breed faster than American roaches and will require multiple treatment visits within 30 days to get the problem under control.

Dos and Don’ts After Cockroach Treatments

After receiving cockroach treatments, you must take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety and prevent them from returning. Only do light cleaning for the first few days or weeks after treatment. Your pest control specialists will tell you what you can and cannot do.

Other suggestions include:

  • Cleaning all food preparation and eating areas after returning home. Continue to clean them regularly to keep them free of food particles.
  • Removing all cardboard and paper products from the kitchen, especially if they are or could become damp.
  • Inspecting anything you buy used or secondhand. You can also leave these items in the sun or freezer for 24 hours to kill cockroaches if you think they are present.
  • Fixing and sealing any cracks and leaks in your home.

Ask your specialist for advice and suggestions to ensure you reduce the likelihood of cockroaches returning. If you have questions, you can direct them to Royal Pest & Termite, Inc.
